Scholarships for Nigerian Students: What's Actually Available in 2026

Nigerian applicants show up in force on Chevening's and Fulbright's shortlists year after year, which is genuinely reassuring if you're applying. What's less well known is that there's also a Nigeria specific route that most "top scholarships" lists skip entirely, simply because it's a government scheme rather than something globally famous.

The Nigeria-Specific Route Most Lists Skip

The PTDF Overseas Scholarship Scheme, run by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, funds MSc and PhD study in oil, gas, and energy related fields at partner universities in the UK, Germany, France, and Malaysia. It requires NYSC completion and at least a Second Class Lower degree, with applications typically closing in February. There's also the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) scheme, funding study in partner countries that shift by cycle.

Where Nigerian Applicants Do Particularly Well Internationally

Nigeria is a Chevening eligible country, and Nigerian applicants are consistently among the largest cohorts each year. Fulbright is administered separately through the US Embassy in Nigeria. Commonwealth Shared Scholarships fund UK Master's study for lower income Commonwealth countries including Nigeria, and DAAD sees especially strong uptake from Nigerian engineering applicants. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has a long standing focus on African students, including Nigerians.

Don't Confuse Domestic Awards With Study-Abroad Funding

Programmes like the NNPC/Total National Merit Scholarship Award support Nigerian students at Nigerian universities, not study abroad.

How to Actually Improve Your Odds

Start early. PTDF and most international scholarships have deadlines six to twelve months before intake. If PTDF is your target, get your NYSC and degree classification sorted first. For Chevening and Commonwealth, build a leadership story with measurable outcomes. For example, rather than "I led community projects," try "I coordinated a team of 15 volunteers to deliver clean water access to 3 rural communities over 6 months." It's worth combining a Nigeria specific scheme with an international one, since eligibility criteria barely overlap.
